Review: When I have to work early, there’s no time for a home made breakfast. It’s s*** shower shave and shampoo in five minutes and get to work. Where, then, does my morning nourishment come from? Usually it comes from an assembly line sandwich from the nearest Dunkin’ Donuts. The food I shovel into my body has been “made” for days, weeks or even months prior. As a fan of local and natural foods, the thought of how many of these rock sandwiches I have eaten nauseates me.
Today, this lazy American awakening would not stand. Not when I have so much to explore at the newest restaurant opening near my work.
The friendly woman who operates Momi’s Cafe hadn’t even turned on the crepe maker yet. Technically, Momi’s Cafe wasn’t even open yet. This didn’t stop her from firing up the griddle and offering to pull one of the tables outside so that I could people watch with my breakfast. As much as I would have liked to watch the rats race while I chewed, I too had to race through the maze to get my cheese, so I ordered a raspberry crepe to go.
Sufficiently eggy and not too thin, my crepe was ready in record time, filled with giant organic raspberries and just the right amount of whipped cream. Such a combination of fresh ingredients and sweetness polished off with just a light sprinkle of powdered sugar was a far better way to start off the day than Plexiglas bacon strips and dish sponge eggs. The fact that my crepe measured in at too-much-for-one-man’s-breakfast made for a delicious morning of munching as well. I can’t say it was the best crepe I’ve ever had, but that would just be my critical side kicking in. Regardless of the question of “best,” I eventually finished the crepe and licked every bit of cream and berry out of the plastic container. That should be a testament to this crepe, especially when considering that I wasn’t very hungry after downing the entire thing.
I thanked the woman behind the counter at Momi’s for her attentiveness and willingness to start her work day earlier than usual for me, but she gave me one of those “nonsense” looks and told me that I was her “lucky boy” because I was the first customer. With a smile and personal connection that is so rare in the rushed and crowded confines of downtown Chicago, she told me that I was welcome any time.
Congratulations, Momi Cafe! You just made a regular out of me.
