Review: Man I hate it when I miss the Green City Market on Saturdays! It just means that I’m going to have to settle for cheap, chemical laden and virtually tasteless produce from my local supermarket…

…until now!

Enter Green Grocer Chicago. Brainchild of Cassie Green, this tiny grocer aims to bring local, organic and responsibly produced foodstuffs to the good people of Chicago’s West Town neighborhood (or anyone else who makes the trek… like me!). Inside, you’ll find an astounding variety of products with an even more astounding flavor. Oh, and don’t be afraid to ask for help or educate yourself with a seemingly stupid question. Everyone who works at Green Grocer Chicago is more than willing to help you out with your grocery needs. They’ll probably even remember your name the next time you come in. When’s the last time the supermarket employees did that?

Green Grocer’s produce is largely the very same produce I find at the local farmers markets around Chicago at comparable prices. My raspberries were kept fresh in a small refrigeration display along with a variety of other fresh produce direct from local farms here in the midwest (and some from City Farm, right here in Chicago). Plump, juicy, local and organic, the flavors caused me to hit the berries hard. Needless to say, they didn’t last too long, but they were worth every cent.

I’ve said before that it is high time for a renaissance of smaller independent business that connect with other businesses and (most importantly) their community. Green Grocer Chicago could be the model.
