Review: I don’t usually work on weekends and I don’t usually buy donuts for breakfast. Since I was doing the former, I thought I’d also do the latter. Of course, I asked for a cruller without the French twist, but didn’t realize that the counterperson had given me the soggy European derivative until I was halfway to work and halfway through with my coffee.

There are a ton of ways far worse than getting the wrong donut in your breakfast sack to start off the day, but that doesn’t mean this triviality won’t piss you off a heap in the morning. After slugging my way dutifully through my coffee and forcing down my breakfast sandwich, I ruefully unwrapped the soggy waxpaper dripping with crystalline soggy sweetness.

When it comes to crullers, I like the American bastardized versions that waft of day old coffee cake with their heavy clumpiness and crisp sugar shell. This… This was a fluffy ring fit for a Barbie Doll, not a coffee-slugging, sandwich-forcing morning laborer. A ring of deceptive pastry that looks light and fluffy, but is reduced to mush with so much as a delicate tap. So unfit was this puddle of sweet, that it made me run for the commode, clutching my stomach, just a few hours later…

…okay, so that might have been due in part to the egg-loaf sandwich as well, but I’ll be damned if I’ll let the fulfilled portions of my breakfast order take all of the blame.
