Review: Half of the waitstaff working this morning at Iguana Cafe looked at me as if I might be a street person (I didn’t shower, but I did a pit check) while the other half were warm and welcoming. It was lunch time and I hadn’t had any coffee yet, so while I was waiting for the southbound Halsted bus, Iguana caught my eye. Maybe I didn’t present myself as friendly or particularly savvy to the customer characteristics we have all come to follow automatically, but I plead caffeine withdrawal. All in all, Iguana looks like a nice local cafe with a bit of a European pub feel going on. The menu looks reasonable and you can build your own sandwich by proxy (telling the waitress what you want on it, piece by piece), but all I needed today was coffee.
Hopefully the food is just a tad more exceptional than the coffee at Iguana Cafe. I’m not sure what brand of coffee they use (pre-caffeine muddiness and all), but it tastes a lot like Dunkin’ Donuts brand. At nearly ten cents more than a cup of DD joe, it’s not worth it. Not bad, mind you, just not what you come to expect from an independent coffee shop. I like Dunkin’ Donuts coffee in all of its watery earthiness, but I go to Dunkin’ Donuts for it, not the local cafe. DD is a wham-bam-thank-you-m’am type of coffee house while a cafe should be more of a first date a’la The Wonder Years. I’ll go back to Iguana to try the food, but remind me to shower and to have my coffee before I go.
