Review: Rodan is only open for their fantastic brunch on Sundays (I haven’t reviewed it yet, because my girlfriend has treated me both times I have gone), so it was back to a time-tested standby for breakfast. Instead of my usual (tofu benedict or seitan reuben), I decided to try the Huevos Rancheros.

A simple dish, this plate comes with two eggs cooked sunny-side up set atop a large mound of brown rice and a black bean, corn and pepper mixture. Below all of that are two tortillas for your bread content.

Though simple in construction and containing no strong flavors, the flavors that are present are good ones. The brown rice is fresh and cooked correctly (no cruncy pieces). The eggs are just right without being too runny. The black bean mixture doesn’t have too much corn or too many onions. All of the flavors are balanced, and for a wake-up meal, this is all you can really ask. Even if you don’t ask, another result you will achieve from this sizeable dish is to be satisfied by the time you walk out of Earwax.

Great service as always, from the always friendly Dolores and the rest of the staff. Even on busy mornings at Earwax, you do not feel rushed and rarely feel cramped.
