Review: I bought this Canola Oil in order to make spicy french fry sandwiches, but considering I threw up before leaving work to go over to my girlfriend’s house, I instead sat on the couch fighting a mean case of food poisoning while being comforted by a kitten who plays fetch with bottle caps. I did eat a little bit of delicious veggie lasagna (the food in my stomach helped) that my girlfriend made but didn’t think it a good idea to tempt the fates by following through on my meal plans which ended up with a bunch of food that I was too cramped to use. Most of these items I have used before, however, and I will do my best to comment on them.
I prefer extra virgin olive oil for any of my frying needs, but when it comes to a vat of oil used to submerge potato strips in, I needed something a bit less expensive. Canola oil, which has only been with us as a consumer product since the 1970s, hails from Canada and is actually oil from rapeseed. Due to the overwhelming politeness of Canadians, they changed the name to CANadian Oil, Low Acid. Regardless, it was the cheapest bottle of cooking oil on the shelf at Dominick’s. Not too bad for a slippery, neutral tasting oil that turns potatoes into crispy fingerfoods of joy.
Crisco brand oils brag about the fact that they have no trans fats, but be careful, because the FDA allows oils with half a gram of trans fats per serving to deny all existence of this heart disease amplifier. I’m still a long way off from being able to afford enough olive oil to make french fries on a regular basis. Until then, Crisco’s my oil.
