Review: One reason I go into the Caribou Coffee near my place of employment is because of the people who work behind the counter. They are all top notch and most of them I consider friends. Another reason I go, is because of the things I learn about coffee from them. Like, for instance, I never knew that light roast coffee has more caffeine than dark roast. Caribou Joe taught me that. And the coffee rating system? Well, I can’t say I’m an expert, but I am able to eye up a bag of coffee beans and tell if it is on the upper or lower end of things.
The second reason I come to Caribou (being nestled snugly in between the previous two reasons I gave you) is because the coffee is actually pretty damn good. Unlike some of the other multi-national conglomerate drug dealers *cough*starbucks*cough* they don’t overroast their beans or inject them with any foreign coffee-steroid. They just know how to grind and brew and keep fresh a good cup of joe. Addicted? Naw. Though I am shaking… I think I might head back down the street.
Note (12/19/2005) : This time, I didn’t purchase a coffee for myself. I bought a cup for the man who asked me for change out on the freezing cold Chicago streets. He also asked if I wanted to buy some batteries he was hustling. I declined but gave him a couple of bucks anyway. He was very respectful and not at all pushy like most of the people who ask me for money. I give a lot of change away when I can spare, but I have to admit that I do feel better when I can help someone out with something that will do them some good (in this case, a hot drink on a cold night).
Note (01/02/2006) : I was disappointed to notice that Caribou Coffee has raised their prices on their coffee of the day. Now their prices are exactly the same as Starbucks. I guess competition has been replace by simply keeping pace.
